What is a core charge on an auto part?

Published · 2 min read · OE Parts Giant

The short answer

A core charge is a charge associated with a replacement part that may be refunded when you return the original part under the seller's conditions. The official Mopar eStore core-return policy gives an example: certain parts have a core charge, and the original part must be returned to the selling dealership for a refund, subject to its return conditions.

A core return is not an ordinary unused-part return

The Mopar eStore lists its core-return terms separately from ordinary parts returns. Its core policy says customers arrange transport of the original part, pay applicable shipping charges and may need to meet condition requirements. It also says a core can be rejected if it is not properly packaged.

Those are that store's published terms, not an OE Parts Giant return policy. Do not assume a charge or refund process applies to a part here just because another seller offers one.

Ask before discarding the old component

Our practical checklist before agreeing to buy a part with a core charge:

  • Is there a core charge on this exact part, separate from its purchase price?
  • Which original component is eligible to return?
  • What condition and packaging are required?
  • Where must it go, by when, and who pays transport?
  • What documents are needed, and how is a qualifying refund issued?

Keep the original component and paperwork until the seller confirms the arrangement. A refund is conditional; this article does not promise an amount, deadline or acceptance of your old part.

Keep the part and the terms matched

A brand label is not a core-return agreement. Our guide to what OEM means on a Mopar part explains that terminology. Start with the exact item in the parts catalog, then confirm whether any core terms apply to it.

OE Parts Giant's ordering explanation says online checkout is not enabled. A parts question is an inquiry, not an order or reservation; availability, fitment, price and buying arrangements need confirmation.
